Were the Greek Othrys Mountain named after India’s Adri or Himalaya Mountains? According to the Sanskrit dictionary Adri translates as “A stone, a rock, a mountain; a stone for pounding Soma with or grinding upon; a stone for a sling, a thunderbolt; a mountain-shaped mass of clouds or a cloud (the mountains are the clouds personified and regarded as the enemies of Indra.) The Himalayas are also known as Him-adri or ‘House of Ice’. Himadri in Sanskrit comes from hima meaning cold, frost + adri means mountain. Interestingly Mount Othrys is called Mount Goura by the local population in Greece to this very day. Again when seen as Greek the word Goura or Gaura has no meaning yet in Sanskrit it is full of significance: white, yellowish, reddish, pale red, shining, brilliant, clean and beautiful. A snow capped Mount Othrys with a name signifying ‘white’ fits the evidence of a Vedic Sanskrit speaking people.
